Different use of Construction

Categories: Water Conservation

Construction is a field that is very vital to the development of infrastructure in all cities, towns, states, and countries throughout the World. It has been realized that construction is the way to have buildings and frameworks completed. According to merriam-webster.com construction is defined as “the process, art, or manner of constructing something.” Construction is different from manufacturing because to manufacture something is the act or process of producing something (www.merriam-webster.com) and normally involves the mass production of similar items without having a designated person to purchase the items, while construction normally takes place at a site and the purchaser is known.

Construction is known as one of the nation’s largest industries and employs a lot of people. According to Finkel, “the American construction industry is a vibrant and dynamic segment of the overall economy and it is annually responsible for nearly 4% of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP)” (2). In 1996 the construction field provided jobs for more than 5 million people and nearly 1.

5 million support jobs in various related fields. Even Though this key role in the overall economy, there have been little key economic works that have focused on this important national industry. In this country, “construction economics remains relegated to engineering and estimating, while labor relations are often seen as an offshoot of the industrial collective bargaining experience” (2).

Construction begins with planning, design, and financing and often is continued until the object is built and is ready to be used.

The construction industry is a vital model of the advancement of all nations as it makes it possible for businesses to begin and become viable throughout the world. Construction can also be a very hazardous industry that includes an extensive number of jobs, such as, construction, alteration, and repair. No matter if the job is constructing a new bridge or skyscraper there are many different areas of expertise that is needed to complete a project. In order for a person to work in the construction field, there are a number of skills he or she should possess. The skills include good communication skills, be physical fit, have good hand-eye coordination, and be able to work well with others and be a part of a team. These skills are particularly important because while a person is on the job, he or she may have to communicate with co-worker’s valuable information needed to construct the building or home. In the construction industry an architect generally manages the job and a project engineer, construction engineer, design engineer, project manager or a construction manager may supervisor the job. A person who would like to become a construction manager may start in the construction field as a construction tradesperson.

As a construction tradesperson, they would work on a job constructing the buildings with a team and gain valuable experience while on the work site. A construction tradesperson in the construction field can perform a wide range of tasks on the job depending on the particular job. Training for the construction field can differ depending on the position. However, the best training a person can get is on the job training. Depending on the job, an employer may only require a high school diploma and others may require the individual to have a construction license or some type of certification. Community colleges and technical colleges also provide programs for students who are looking to enter the construction field. Attending college or a trade school and on the job training will assist an individual with the tools and knowledge to be successful in the construction field.

Construction employees also should be trained in working with power tools and be able to read a blueprint. When a person gets some experience in working in the construction field a construction tradesperson may be ready to begin training to be a construction manager. For a construction tradesperson to become a construction manager or contractor, they may also need to attend college. Although a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field is sometimes required, some individuals are able to become a construction manger or contractor based on the number of years of experiences they have in construction. Depending on where a person work or the specific skill needed for the construction manager position, a person may have to attend a college or university. Many colleges and universities offer four-year degree programs in construction management, construction engineering or construction science. Some of the programs may include courses in site planning, constructions methods and materials, project control and development and design. Some business and financial management classes may also be needed for those individuals who may want to own their own businesses. There are two categories that construction work can be placed in: rough carpentry and finished carpentry. Rough carpentry/carpenters work outdoors using unfinished wood and other building materials to complete projects. Rough carpentry/carpenters frame houses build scaffolding and make the forms that will be filled with concrete. Forms can be used to mold concrete for bridges, highways and also the foundations for homes.

Finish carpentry/carpenters are individuals who cut and fit the doors, windows, complete the interior molding and they also can build and install cabinets, place the hardwood floors down and place the panel in the rooms. Previously, it was discussed three different fields that a person can take classes in such as, construction management, construction science and construction engineering. According to Construction Management Association of America (2020), “construction management is a professional service that provides a project’s owner(s) with effective management of the project’s schedule, cost, quality, safety, scope, and function.” Construction managers are responsible for overseeing that the project run smoothly. The construction manager is often responsible for the owner’s interest in a project and also has to provide oversight over an entire project directly for the owner of the business. Construction managers are tasked with working with everyone involved in the building process in order to deliver a project on time, at or under the proposed budget and also to the owner’s standard of quality. Often construction managers are qualified through their education and experience in order to be able to work with the owners, general contractor, architect, and other parties involved in the building process.

Another position that a construction trades person can hold is the construction engineering position. According to Learn.org “construction engineers team up with transportation engineers to build roadways and tunnels, and they also collaborate with architects and structural engineers to complete buildings.” A construction engineer’s main job is to manage, plan and supervise the construction jobs that they have as well as project scheduling, analyzing the progress being made, select the equipment and mobilization of the project materials needed for the project. Construction engineers often need a bachelor’s degree, their work environment is in an office setting where they have occasional trips to the job site and the median salary in May 2018 for this position was $86,640. (www.learn.org) In construction there are many advantages and disadvantages to constructing projects in the World.

According to www.webuniqueness.com, “ there are three main benefits of construction in the community, such as additional income, more jobs and improved transportation.” With the development of building projects and homes can bring more income into a town, city, or community. “For example, a construction company is building 200 family homes in your area. The families who will occupy these homes need goods and services. This means that constructing new properties increases the population of the area, thus increasing the number of consumers which will eventually lead to higher sales for local businesses” (www.webuniqueness.com). When this happens, it can also lead to an increase in employee salaries if the businesses are making more money. If there is an increase in the number of individuals that live in an area due to new construction ventures, then it may push employers to hire additional employees to beat the demands that the influx of business may bring. For instance, if a construction firm builds 100 single-family homes in a city, town or neighborhood then it is estimated that about 400 jobs will be created within the city, town or neighborhood (www.webuniqueness.com).

And lastly improved transportation normally happens within a community when new buildings or homes are constructed. With construction comes new roads and this may cut down on travel time to and from work as well as decrease the amount of fuel costs that families may have. Even though construction is known as one of the nation’s largest industries and employs a lot of people it can also have a negative impact on the environment.

Construction can lead to numerous challenges in the economy and environment ( 10). Over the decades there has been a growing concern over the impact that construction has on humans and the environment and how construction can damage the soil and cause pollution. There are many factors that can make construction a challenging issue for the environment. For instance, construction projects need land and space for projects to be build and it can leave a huge impact on the landscape and nature of a town or city and sometimes these things cannot be replaced when a building or home is built or demolished. Construction sites sometimes have to use natural resources, and this can also have an effect on the environment by deforestation and quarrying. Construction sites can also develop air contaminants that can be harmful to society, such as from fumes or materials that are used to complete a project. The transportation that constructions sites use can also affect the environment negatively by emitting carbon monoxide into the air.

The emission of carbon monoxide into the air can have a damaging effect on the environment by increasing global warming, pollution, or respiratory problems in humans. Now that many construction companies are aware of the damage that they can cause they now have strategies in place to deal with the damages that their projects may cause, such as, designing and installing soil erosion controls to limit the part of the soil that is exposed during the construction process. Many construction companies are conducting soil stabilization activities and are now practicing green construction. Green construction involves reducing gas emissions and other environmental problems a building may cause for the entire lifetime that the building is there. “Sustainable buildings and structures includes the study of the possibility of the use of clean renewable energy, the optimal use of the requested energy, water conservation, use of building materials reuse, improve the quality of the human environment” (1).

There can also be a numerous amount of waste on a construction site. Construction waste is sometimes produced due to raw materials and filtering raw materials for the construction process. It is almost impossible that the environment will be exposed to some type of damage due to construction projects. Most construction companies are doing a good job at minimizing the damage that they cause to the environment and sustainability is the key to this happening. With sustainability in construction companies are always looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact while continuing to create economic sustainability so that individuals can feel safe and be comfortable. For construction companies to continue to have sustainable development they have to ensure that the buildings they are producing have a low environmental impact to society. As more advantages are realized, that there are many positive aspects of green construction development.

Green construction development is categorized into three divisions: money, social and ecological. These three categories show the multi-angle commitment to sustainable buildings and is also one of the most important aspects of constructions companies to focus on the building life cycle and being able to consolidate utility with resource management. In conclusion, construction continues to be a field that is very vital to the development of infrastructure in all cities, towns, states, and countries throughout the World. There are many positions that a person can have if he or she would like to work in the construction field and also there are several advantages and disadvantages on how construction can affect the environment. There are many phases to construction, such as, planning, design, and financing and these phases are continued until the object is built and is ready to be used.

The construction industry is a vital model of the advancement of all nations as it makes it possible for businesses to begin and become viable throughout the world. Construction can also be a very hazardous industry that includes an extensive number of jobs, such as, construction, alteration, and repair. No matter if the job is constructing a new bridge or skyscraper there are many different areas of expertise that is needed in order for a project to be completed safely. Communities need to be more aware of the effects that construction has on the environment and things that construction companies are doing to ensure that they decrease the harmful effects that their business may have. Using green construction and sustainable construction are two ways that construction companies are holding themselves accountable for the damage they may cause to the environment. Sustainable construction and green construction have plenty of advantages that can always be beneficial to society.
