Science as the Key to Solving Problems

Categories: Ecology

A well planned science education programme can be a fruitful effort in developing the desired attitudes and shaping the scientific out look. Recognizing the importance of science education Nehru observed that” It is science alone that can solve the problems of hunger and poverty, of insanitation and literacy, of superstitions, customs, and tradition of vasr resources running off waste, of a rich country inhabited by starvingbpeople”.

The society of the twenty first century will, quite clearly, continue to be shaped by science and technology, quite as importantly, science and technology are indispensable in helping the societies from where they are now to where they aspire to be in the next century.

The proper and responsible use of science and technology is an urgent need of all societies, in order to achieve twin goals of development and of improved quality of life for each society. Teaching of science in schools can and should make a positive difference in the lives of all people.

In the past science science had struggled hard and long for its rightful place in the school curriculum. There was a time when science was considered as an inferior subject to study and classics were given importance. Since education in one form or another, has a recognized place in school education now (Trivedi and Agrawal ,2016)

Education in itself a broader term which includes many fields, such as history, science, literature, religion etc. Among these, science, “study of facts and figures on experiments” hold a special status.

Science can be called as “ the savior of mankind”. No field of life is left aside of its impacts. From investigations to discoveries, it has shortened the journey of man. Verily it brings into light what is hidden from human’s sight( Shaheen & Kayani, 2016).

Biological Science

Biological science is the study of life and living organisms. Earlier study of living things was restricted to pure science like botany and zoology . But the time passed new branches evolved , new technologies were developed, in pure subjects, as well as in applied fields , which gave rise to a very broad science called bioscience.

The knowledge of bioscience helps the students to develop individual sensitive to nature and make him feels a home with it and also develops scientific outlook and develop respect towards nature and protect it. Biology knowledge generate interest about his surroundings. Biology is a science which is open to the new development. It is clear that with this science people can know themselves anatomically and physiologically, improve their way of thinking about the world and think scientifically, grasp the main idea about the nature so that the living culture will be created( Sulun, Gurbuz & kandemir,2004).

Attitude of Students

Attitude is fairly a stable emotional tendency to respond consistently to some specific object , situation, person or category of people. It has three components cognitive core, affective values, and behaviour action tendencies. Cognitive aspect of attitude consists of beliefs and ideas that a person has about the attitude object. The affective component includes the feelings of like and dislike towards any object, and the behavioural aspect consists of intentions to respond in particular way towards the object ( Uroog,2000). Attitude plays an important role in education.

An important factor of expert subjects is the interests and attitudes of the students to the related lessons. To see how well the behaviours are gained to the students, the attitudes that are believed to be materialized should be measured. If the students are desired to be successful, the attitude of them should be well known.

As a field, biology is the most related science and subject with the others. As content it includes medicine, ecology, genetics, biology of nature, biology of cell. To be successful about this issue, they should have biological science and positive attitudes, should learn about the basics of biology , so the education of the biology in the schools should be well done.

Understanding the student attitude is important in supporting their achievement and interest towards a particular discipline, attitude towards science have been extensively studied ( Dhinda & Chung, 2003 ; Osborne, simon, & Collin, 2003), but research was initially focused greatly on science in general ( Dawson, 2000) and less attention was addressed to particular disciplines like biology, physics, chemistry ( Salta & Tzougraki, 2004)
